Idler Pulleys, also known as Idler Wheels, are free moving rollers on a shaft that direct the path of a belt when a straight path is not advisable. Idler wheels can also be used for tensioning drive belts, reducing vibrations, as well as increasing the contact area (wrap angle) of the belt against working pulleys resulting to an increased force-transfer capacity. Idler pulleys are used in various industrial applications such as material handling and in automotive parts such as alternators and water pump.
