Choosing a sanding belt

Start with the machine. The belt width and length must match your sander or linisher, so check the size plate or manual before you order, and read sizes as width x length in millimetres. Then choose the abrasive for the job. Aluminium oxide is the common general-purpose grain. Zirconia alumina is aimed at heavier stock removal on steel and stainless. Ceramic is the premium grain for heavy removal and high-volume work. Silicon carbide suits softer and non-ferrous materials. Surface conditioning belts are for blending and finishing, not stock removal.

Grit sets the finish. Coarse grits such as 24 to 40 remove material fast and suit weld dressing and rough shaping. Mid grits such as 60 to 120 suit general shaping and blending. Fine grits from 180 up suit finishing, and the cork-backed belts in 400 to 800 grit are for fine finishing work. Work through the grits in steps rather than jumping from coarse to fine, or the coarse scratch pattern will show through.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the belt suits your machine, its maximum belt speed and the material you are working on before use.

Sanding belt FAQs

What sanding belts does AIMS list?

File sander, portable belt sander, linishing, surface conditioning and floor sanding belts from Pferd, Norton, Klingspor, Abbott & Ashby, Linishall and Trax. Widths run from 10mm to 300mm and grits from 24 to 800.

What is the difference between aluminium oxide, zirconia and ceramic belts?

Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose grain. Zirconia alumina is aimed at heavier removal on steel and stainless. Ceramic is the premium grain for heavy stock removal and high-volume work. Check the data sheet for the belt you are considering.

What belt should I use on stainless steel?

Zirconia alumina or ceramic belts are the usual choice for stock removal, followed by a surface conditioning belt for a consistent finish. The Klingspor CS409Y Multibond belts are listed for stainless steel.

What grit should I use?

Use 24 to 40 grit for weld dressing and heavy removal, 60 to 120 grit for general shaping and blending, and 180 grit and finer for finishing. Step through the grits rather than skipping several at once.

How do I find the right belt size?

Check the size plate or manual on your machine. Belt sizes are width x length in millimetres. If you are unsure, call us on (02) 9773 0122 with the machine make and model.

What is a surface conditioning belt?

A non-woven belt used for blending, satin finishing and preparing a surface before polishing. It is not designed for fast stock removal. We list Pferd belts in 100, 180 and 240 grit and Abbott & Ashby belts in fine, medium and polishing grades.

Do you have belts for portable sanders and fixed linishers?

Yes. Portable belt sander belts run from 70 to 100mm wide and 400 to 610mm long. Linishing belts for fixed machines run from 50 to 300mm wide and up to 4270mm long. See also our Linishall range of belt grinders.
