Choosing Cleaning Products
Match the chemical to the job
Start with what you are removing and what it sits on. Oil and grease on machinery or concrete call for a degreaser. General soiling on floors and benches suits a detergent. Electrical equipment needs a contact or electrical parts cleaner that leaves no residue. Don't assume one product suits every surface: some cleaners can damage aluminium, sealed concrete or painted finishes, so check the data sheet and test a small area first.
Aerosol or bulk
Aerosols suit spot cleaning, tight spaces and machinery you can't wet down. Bulk concentrates such as Applied's 15 L and 25 L drums suit floors, tanks and regular workshop use, and cost less per litre once diluted to the label rate.
Hand cleaners
Grit and pumice hand cleaners lift grease and paint, and are available in bar, liquid and bulk forms. Wipe-style cleaners such as Scrubs towels are handy where there's no water. Choose based on how heavy the soiling is, and see our Industrial Hand Cleaner Guide.
Vacuums
Metabo wet and dry vacuums are offered as mains-powered and cordless models. Models carry an L, M or H dust class. Check the product data sheet and the dust you are collecting, particularly for fine or hazardous dusts, and use the class your site requirements call for.

Which degreaser should I use in a workshop?

What is the difference between a detergent and a degreaser?
A detergent is a general cleaner for everyday soiling on floors and surfaces. A degreaser is formulated to break down oil, grease and heavy workshop contamination. Many products overlap, so read the label for the surfaces and soils it is intended for.
What hand cleaner is suitable for workshop use?
Grit or pumice-based hand cleaners such as GritMitts, Septone Protecta Grit and Inox Mint Grit suit greasy hands. Towel-style cleaners such as Scrubs suit use away from a basin. Choose by how heavy the soiling is, and check the label if you have sensitive skin.
