Choosing a primer or activator
Match the product to the adhesive system and the surface. A primer prepares a surface the adhesive would not otherwise bond to, such as polyolefin plastics. An activator speeds the cure of the adhesive itself, which helps on surfaces that slow it down. Inactive surfaces such as stainless steel and zinc-plated finishes can slow the cure of anaerobic adhesives, so an activator is often used there. Devcon Flexane primers are made for Devcon Flexane urethane repairs on rubber and metal, and Epirez primers go with Epirez epoxy systems.
Clean and degrease the surface first. See cleaning chemicals and contact cleaners. Our Loctite Threadlocker Guide and Epoxy Adhesive Guide explain how these products fit with the adhesives themselves.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the primer or activator suits your adhesive, surface and conditions before use.

Primers and activators FAQs
What is the difference between a primer and an activator?
A primer prepares a surface that an adhesive would not otherwise bond to, such as polyolefin plastics. An activator speeds the cure of the adhesive on surfaces that slow it down. Check the data sheet for which suits your adhesive.
Do I need an activator on stainless steel?
Inactive surfaces such as stainless steel and zinc-plated finishes can slow the cure of anaerobic adhesives such as threadlockers. An activator helps the adhesive cure there. Confirm against the adhesive data sheet.
Which primer suits a Devcon Flexane repair?
Devcon lists the Flexane Primer for Metal (FL10) for metal surfaces and the Flexane Primer for Rubber (FL20) for rubber surfaces, both 120ml, for use before Flexane urethane repair compounds.
Can I use any primer with any adhesive?
No. Use the primer made for the adhesive system. Loctite primers go with Loctite adhesives, Devcon Flexane primers with Flexane urethane, and Epirez primers with Epirez epoxy.
What do you have for concrete surface prep?
The Epirez Concrete Etch and Cleaner (5L) is listed for preparing concrete before epoxy products are applied. Follow the data sheet for method and rinsing.
