Flanges are external rims designed to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment in a piping system. Alternatively, using flanges facilitates convenient dismantling for maintenance works. Flanges generally have a bore size larger than the outer diameter of the pipe to accommodate it and are normally welded to the pipe. A gasket is placed between flanges before bolting them together to promote a leak-free connection. Flanges are usually made from stainless steel to prohibit corrosion and are available in various types depending on the process requirement.
