Straight flute pipe taps are used to cut or repair an internal thread in pipes or fittings that will be mated with a threaded pipe to make pressure-tight joints. They may be used with an appropriate tap wrench and operated by hand or by using rotary machines such as lathes to drive the tap into the pipes or fittings.
