Spiral point pipe taps are used to cut or repair an internal thread in pipes or fittings that will be mated with a threaded pipe. They may be used with an appropriate tap wrench and operated by hand or by using rotary machines such as lathes to drive the tap into the pipes or fittings. The spiral angle on the front of the tap pushes the swarf away from the cutting edges and through the hole during tapping. Spiral point pipe taps are commonly made from different high speed steel compositions and are available in various sizes.
