Spiral flute pipe taps are devices used to cut or repair an internal thread in pipes or fittings that will be mated with a threaded pipe. They may be used with an appropriate tap wrench and operated by hand or by using rotary machines such as lathes to drive the tap into the pipes or fittings. They are designed with flutes that wrap their axis in a spiral configuration to eject swarf away from the cutting edges during tapping. Furthermore, the short projection of the flute is designed for shallow-hole applications. Spiral flute pipe taps are available in various sizes and helix angles.
