Imperial thread forming taps or chip-free taps are tools used to create threads in softer materials such as aluminum, copper, and soft steel among others. Unlike cutting taps that remove materials to make the thread, thread forming taps displace the material to make the thread. Form tapping results in a stronger thread due to the compressing of the material and does not leave chips or swarf after tapping. Thread forming taps are available in various imperial standard sizes and in different thread forms.
