Speed nuts, also known as spring nuts and sheet metal nuts, are fasteners stamped from steel that unlike regular nuts, have prong-like protrusions that act as threads. These spring nuts typically have arched bases that elastically deform and apply pressure to the bearing surface of the threaded fastener, effectively locking itself in place to prevent loosening during vibrations. They act both as a lock washer and a nut, and are typically held by hand in position during installation eliminating the use of wrenches and reducing production time. Speed nuts are available in different varieties commonly derived from their configuration or form such as J-nuts, U-nuts, and flat nuts.
