Stick electrodes are consumable electrodes used in manual arc welding processes in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux-shielded arc welding, or simply stick welding. These stick electrodes consist of a rod covered with flux that when burned in the arc, releases a shielding gas to protect the molten weld from atmospheric impurities. Additionally, the flux stabilizes the arc that affects the quality of the weld. Stick electrodes may have high iron concentration for an increased deposition rate and are commonly used in welding steel, stainless steel, and cast iron.
