Selecting the right option

Choose brass over steel when the shim needs to be non-magnetic or when it will sit in a damp or mildly corrosive environment steel wouldn’t tolerate long-term. For marine, washdown, or chemical exposure, stainless is the better choice. Stack no more than three or four shims to fill a single gap — beyond that, a single thicker gauge or a machined spacer gives a more stable result.
