Ball Nose End Mills
AIMS Industrial sells ball nose end mills for 3D contouring, profiling, cavity milling and blending operations on CNC machining centres and manual mills. Our range of solid carbide and HSS ball nose end mills from Sutton Tools and Bordo covers diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm for precision finishing in steel, aluminium, stainless and exotic alloys.
Ball Nose End Mill Types
- Solid carbide ball nose end mills: Superior rigidity and cutting speed over HSS — the standard for CNC finishing and high-speed machining of hardened steel and stainless.
- HSS ball nose end mills: Cost-effective for manual milling and lower-volume CNC work in mild steel and aluminium where carbide longevity is not required.
- 2-flute ball nose end mills: Wide flute gullets clear chips in deep pockets and slotting operations where recutting must be avoided.
- 4-flute ball nose end mills: Better surface finish and reduced axial deflection in hard materials — preferred for final finishing passes on hardened steel and titanium.
- TiAlN-coated end mills: High-performance PVD coating extends tool life 3–5× in hardened steel, stainless steel and high-temperature alloy machining.
Machining and Application Considerations
- Stepover and cusp height: Smaller ball nose diameter with smaller stepover produces finer surface finish at the cost of longer cycle time — balance to drawing tolerance.
- Helix angle: High-helix (45°+) ball noses reduce cutting forces and vibration in deep profiling — important for slender workpieces and thin walls.
- Radial depth of cut: Ball nose tools should not exceed 50% radial engagement for roughing — smaller engagements preserve cutting edge and improve finish.
- CNC compatibility: Confirm shank diameter, flute length and overall length match your toolholder and machine Z-axis travel before ordering.
