Bossweld 2% Thoriated Tungsten Electrodes are non-consumable electrodes for DC TIG welding, supplied in packs of 10 at 178 mm long. This listing covers the 1.0, 3.2 and 4.0 mm diameters. The 2% thorium oxide content gives easy arc starting, a stable arc and long electrode life, which is why thoriated tungsten is a common choice for DC work on mild steel and stainless steel.

Thoriated electrodes are used on DC, with the torch on electrode negative. They are not the right choice for AC welding of aluminium. For that job, look at the zirconated, lanthanated or rare earth electrodes. Thoriated tungsten contains thorium oxide, which is weakly radioactive. The risk is mainly from grinding dust, so grind with extraction, keep the dust away from food and drink, and follow the manufacturer's safety data sheet and your site procedures.

Selecting the right option

Pick the diameter from your welding current and joint, and check that your torch collet and collet body match it. Smaller diameters suit lower current on thinner material, and larger diameters carry more current. Grind the tip to a taper with the grinding marks running along the length of the electrode, and use a wheel kept for tungsten only so the tip stays clean.
