Choosing an Anchor coating
Work from the surface and the job. Clean, bare steel, aluminium or galvanised metal that needs a topcoat to stick is a job for an etch primer, which is applied thinly to clean bare metal and is not a filler or build coat. Structural steel is normally primed with a structural primer before topcoating. Cut edges, weld zones and damaged galvanised surfaces suit a zinc-rich cold galvanising product, and the aerosols help where brush access is awkward. Anti-rust paint and the Hammer finish are applied as protective coloured coats over prepared metal, while enamels and lacquers are finishing coats where colour and gloss matter.
For marking, the aerosols differ by job. Line marking paint is for lines and layout, Spot N Survey is a survey marking paint with a long colour list including fluorescents, and Mine Marking Paint has a shorter list of fluorescent and standard colours. The paint marker is for labelling parts and materials by hand.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm recoat times, compatibility between primer and topcoat, temperature rating and surface preparation for your job before you start. If you are unsure which products work together as a system, call us.

Anchor paint FAQs
What Anchor paints does AIMS list?
We list 31 Anchor products: anti-rust metal paint, cold galvanising and zinc coatings, etch and structural primers, enamels, lacquer and touch-up aerosols, heat resistant paint, marking paint and markers, and a paint stripper.
What is the difference between etch primer and structural primer?
Etch primer is applied as a thin coat to clean bare metal, including aluminium, steel and galvanised surfaces, to give a topcoat something to key to. It is not a filler or build coat. Structural primer is listed in grey, red and blue for steelwork, in liquid and 400 g aerosol. Check the data sheet for the topcoats each primer suits.
When should I use cold galvanising instead of anti-rust paint?
Cold galvanising products are zinc-rich coatings used where hot-dip galvanising is not practical, such as weld repairs and damaged or cut galvanised surfaces. Anti-rust paint is a protective coloured coat for prepared metal. Choose by the surface and the finish you need, and check the data sheet.
What heat resistant Anchor paint do you list?
Anchor Hi Temp Heat Resistant Paint is listed in black as a 300 g aerosol or a 500 ml brush and roller pack, and in silver as a 300 g aerosol. Check the data sheet for the temperature rating against your application before you buy.
Which Anchor marking paint should I choose?
Line Marking Paint 500 g suits lines and layout, Spot N Survey 350 g suits survey marking and has fluorescent colours, Mine Marking Paint 400 g is listed in six colours, and the 3 mm Paint Marker is for hand labelling of parts and materials.
Do you have a paint stripper?
Yes. Anchor One Shot Paint Stripper is listed in 500 ml, 1 L and 4 L. Check the data sheet for the surfaces and coatings it suits before use.
