Choosing a mounted point
Start with the work. Pick the shape that matches the surface you are reaching, such as a cylinder for flat or internal walls, a cone or B shape for tight angles, and a ball or A shape for radii. Shape letters such as A, B and W follow the manufacturer's system, so check the shape drawing on the product page. Then choose the abrasive for the material. Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose choice, while ceramic, silicon carbide and Steel Edge points are made for particular jobs, so check the product details.
Grit sets the finish, with coarse grits removing stock and finer grits blending and finishing. Pferd points also carry a hardness grade, and as a general rule a harder grade suits softer material and a softer grade suits harder material. For polishing, use the POLIFLEX points, and for a fine finish after grinding the felt points are listed in several shapes.
Every mounted point has a maximum speed, which must not be exceeded. Match it to your die grinder or rotary tool, fit the right shank size, and wear eye and face protection. Always check the data sheet. Confirm the maximum speed, shank and size of each point before use.

Mounted point FAQs
What is a mounted point used for?
A mounted point is a small abrasive tool bonded to a shank. It is used in a die grinder or rotary tool to grind, deburr, blend and finish metal in tight spaces, such as holes, recesses and internal features, where a full-size grinding wheel will not fit.
What mounted points does AIMS list?
There are 77 active products: 44 aluminium oxide points, 4 ceramic, 6 silicon carbide, 3 Steel Edge, 6 POLIFLEX polishing points, 10 felt points, a dressing stone and 3 assorted sets. Most are from Pferd and Norton.
What shape mounted point should I use?
Choose the shape that matches the surface. Cylindrical points suit flat and internal walls, cone and B shapes reach tight angles, and A shapes and ball shapes suit radii. Check the shape drawing on the product page, because the letters follow the manufacturer's system.
What is the difference between aluminium oxide, ceramic and silicon carbide points?
They are different abrasives. Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose choice, and ceramic and silicon carbide points are made for particular materials and duties. Check the product details for the material each point suits, or call us on (02) 9773 0122.
What does the hardness grade mean?
Pferd points carry a hardness grade letter, for example J, L, M, N or O. As a general rule, a harder grade suits softer material and a softer grade suits harder material. Check the product details for the right grade for your work.
What is a mounted point dressing stone for?
The Pferd dressing stone in this range is used to dress and true grinding wheels rather than to grind a workpiece directly. It is listed at 70 x 22 x 12mm, 46 grit.
How fast can I run a mounted point?
Every mounted point has a maximum speed on its label or data sheet. Never exceed it, match it to your grinder's speed, and wear eye and face protection.
