Flap wheels are cylindrical abrasive tools made up of overlapping abrasive cloth 'flaps' radially bonded to a central arbor or mandrel. As the wheel rotates, each flap contacts the workpiece in sequence — providing a smooth, consistent cutting action that combines material removal with surface blending.

Flap wheels are used for deburring tube, pipe and bar ends, blending welds in curved or internal profiles, removing surface rust and mill scale, and achieving a consistent scratch pattern on cylindrical components and internal bores. They are used on drills, die grinders and bench grinders depending on the shank type.

Choosing the Right Flap Wheel

Flap wheel selection depends on the machine being used, the bore or diameter of the surface being finished and the required grit grade.

• Shank Type: Flap wheels are available with 6mm or 1/4-inch shanks for die grinder or drill use, and with threaded or plain arbors for bench grinder fitment. Confirm the shank type suits the tool being used.
• Diameter and Width: The wheel diameter and width must suit the bore or profile being finished. Larger diameter wheels span more surface area per pass; narrower wheels suit tight bores and internal profiles.
• Grit Grade: Coarser grits (40--60) provide fast material removal for deburring and rust removal. Medium grits (80--120) balance material removal with surface blending. Fine grits (180--240) produce a refined scratch pattern for inspection-quality surface finishes.
